They are easy to carve. I use a hot knife cutting blade on a Walnut Hollow Creative Versa-Tool.

Great tip! Thanks. I'm going to be picking up one of those tools. My hot knife is useless ... okay, maybe it's user error but I prefer to blame the tool.
